Two construction workers, and their superintendent start the day with relocating a metal beam on a construction site. It’s early. There’s no sign of life yet, other than some birds and cars on the highway above.

KENNY

OK. A bit to the left now. Jan, can you take a few steps back.

JAN

Keep it steady!

Both men stand still for a moment to take a breather – the beam is fairly heavy.

JAN

How’s your wife Kenny?

Kenny takes another step back to make sure the beam is straight.

KENNY

Oh. Good. We’re going on holiday tomorrow. Leaving at 5 in the morning to beat the traffic.

JAN

Wow! Good thing this is an early finish then, today!

The beam continues to wiggle, whilst their superintendent continues to give directions.

SUPERINTENDENT

GUYS.

Focus.

SUPERINTENDENT

Holidays did not start yet.

KENNY

Yes it’s gonna be SO NICE to finally get to the South of France without the kids. I mean, you love them, but it's also nice to not be a household manager all the time. I can’t wait to …

A bird flies into a stack of windows on the construction site and drops to the floor with a loud ‘thud’.

BANG!

SUPERINTENDENT, looking at where the sound came from

Jesus Christ, what was that?! Was that a bird!?

The men are startled and Jan lets the steel beam slip towards Kenny.

Kenny trips, falls backwards, and the beam lands on top of him.

Kenny remains motionless on the ground.

JAN

Oh my god.

Jan and the superintendent check Kenny’s absent breathing, and start to panic.

After trying to resuscitate him for a while, they both go quiet.

Only birdsong can be heard.

JAN

Does anyone have Janet's number?
