Muy Lejos

Sergio is een fanatieke voetbalsupporter in Barcelona, die met de harde kern naar Utrecht reist voor een uitwedstrijd. Vlak voor zijn terugvlucht wordt hij overvallen door een paniekaanval. In een plotselinge drang om te ontsnappen aan de druk die hem altijd is opgelegd, besluit hij in Nederland te blijven. Zonder zijn keuze te kunnen verklaren aan zijn familie en vrienden, verbreekt hij alle banden met zijn verleden. Muy lejos (‘Ver weg’) is het speelfilmdebuut van de Spaanse regisseur Gerard Oms. Het verhaal ontstond vanuit zijn eigen ervaringen, toen hij jarenlang in Nederland woonde en zich daar soms een buitenstaander voelde. De film speelt zich grotendeels af in Utrecht. De stad speelt een belangrijke rol in het gevoel van vervreemding en het nieuwe begin, dat hoofdpersoon Sergio (Mario Casas) doormaakt. Mario Casas won op het Festival de Málaga de prijs voor Beste Acteur voor zijn rol. Op hetzelfde festival won Muy lejos ook de Prijs van de Filmkritiek. *** Sergio is a die-hard football fan in Barcelona who travels to Utrecht with the hard-core supporters for an away match. Just before his return flight, he is overcome by a panic attack. In a sudden urge to escape the pressure that has always been placed on him, he decides to stay in the Netherlands. Unable to explain his decision to his family and friends, he severs all ties with his past. Muy lejos (‘Far Away’) is the feature film debut of Spanish director Gerard Oms. The story was inspired by his own experiences, having lived in the Netherlands for many years and sometimes feeling like an outsider there. The film is set largely in Utrecht. The city plays a significant role in the sense of alienation and the new beginning experienced by the protagonist, Sergio (Mario Casas). Mario Casas won the Best Actor award at the Málaga Film Festival for his role. At the same festival, Muy lejos also won the Film Critics’ Award.
