Our Land

Noord-Argentinië, 2009. De provincie Tucumán is een vruchtbare landbouwregio die van oudsher wordt bewoond door de Chuschagasta-gemeenschap. Toch beweert ondernemer Dario Amín eigenaar van het land te zijn. Wanneer hij samen met twee handlangers aan 300 Chuschagasta een uitzettingsbevel overhandigt, ontstaat er een confrontatie die eindigt met de moord op de 68-jarige gemeenschapsleider Javier Chocobar. De daad wordt op video vastgelegd, maar het duurt nog negen jaar met protesten voordat de schuldigen voor de rechtbank verschijnen. Voor Amín en zijn handlangers is het geschil over het gebied een puur zakelijke kwestie, maar voor de Chuschagasta-gemeenschap staan ook hun wortels, hun identiteit en hun voortbestaan op het spel. In haar eerste non-fictiefilm Our Land belicht de Argentijnse filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (Zama, La Ciénaga) een tragisch, waargebeurd verhaal van diverse kanten: het moordproces tegen de drie mannen, het leven van Chocobar en zijn mede-Chuschagasta's en de eeuwenoude, koloniale erfenis van uitbuiting, land- en eigendomsroof in heel Latijns-Amerika.. Martel werkte veertien jaar aan Our Land voordat de film in première ging op het Filmfestival van Venetië. The province of Tucumán is a fertile agricultural region that has traditionally been inhabited by the Chuschagasta community. Yet businessman Dario Amín claims to be the owner of the land. When he and two accomplices serve an eviction notice on 300 Chuschagasta, a confrontation ensues which ends with the murder of the 68-year-old community leader Javier Chocobar. The incident is captured on video, but it takes another nine years of protests before the perpetrators appear in court. For Amín and his accomplices, the dispute over the land is purely a business matter, but for the Chuschagasta community, their roots, their identity and their very survival are at stake. In her first non-fiction film, *Our Land*, the Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (Zama, La Ciénaga) a tragic, true story from various angles: the murder trial of the three men, the lives of Chocobar and his fellow Chuschagasta people, and the centuries-old colonial legacy of exploitation, land and property theft across Latin America. Martel spent fourteen years working on *Our Land* before the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The documentary has been internationally acclaimed and has won awards in Locarno, London and the US.
