The History of Sound

In 1917 leert de getalenteerde muziekstudent Lionel (Paul Mescal) zijn medestudent David (Josh O'Connor) kennen aan het conservatorium van Boston. Er ontstaat een sterke band tussen hen vanwege hun grote liefde voor volksmuziek. Wanneer Lionel jaren later een brief van David krijgt, leidt dat tot een geïmproviseerde reis door de wildernis van Maine om volksliedjes te verzamelen. Hun onverwachte hereniging, een daaropvolgende liefdesaffaire en de muziek die ze verzamelen en vastleggen, zullen een bepalende invloed krijgen op de loop van Lionels leven. The History of Sound is gebaseerd op een kort verhaal van Ben Shattuck, die ook het scenario schreef. Paul Mescal en Josh O’Connor zongen hun folkliedjes grotendeels live op de set, onder begeleiding van zangcoach Sam Amidon, wat bijdraagt aan de authenticiteit van hun performances. Regisseur Oliver Hermanus (Moffie, Living) koos ervoor om expliciete seksscènes af te zwakken ten gunste van emotionele intimiteit en karakterontwikkeling, om queer relaties te tonen als meer dan alleen fysieke connecties. * * * In 1917, the talented music student Lionel (Paul Mescal) meets his fellow student David (Josh O'Connor) at the Boston Conservatory. A strong bond forms between them due to their shared passion for folk music. When Lionel receives a letter from David years later, it leads to an impromptu journey through the wilderness of Maine to collect folk songs. Their unexpected reunion, a subsequent love affair, and the music they collect and record will have a defining influence on the course of Lionel’s life. The History of Sound is based on a short story by Ben Shattuck, who also wrote the screenplay. Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor sang their folk songs largely live on set, under the guidance of vocal coach Sam Amidon, which adds to the authenticity of their performances. Director Oliver Hermanus (Moffie, Living) chose to tone down explicit sex scenes in favour of emotional intimacy and character development, to portray queer relationships as more than just physical connections.
