L'engloutie

Tijdens een gure winternacht in 1899 arriveert Aimée (Galatéa Bellugi) in een afgelegen bergdorp in de besneeuwde Franse Alpen. Ze is een jonge, vooruitstrevende onderwijzeres, maar in deze door sneeuw en tradities geïsoleerde gemeenschap blijken geloof en legendes minstens even belangrijk als cijfers en letters. Aimée laat zich door de stugge ontvangst niet afschrikken en, gewapend met haar kennis, gaat ze het analfabetisme en het hardnekkige bijgeloof in het dorp te lijf. Terwijl de sneeuw blijft vallen groeit Aimées betrokkenheid met het dorp en zijn bewoners. Tegelijkertijd ontwaakt er in haar een intense, sensuele onrust. L’Engloutie (‘De verzwolgen vrouw’) is een poëtisch, bevreemdend en soms beklemmend winters ‘folk-drama’, waarin verlangen, angst en bijgeloof samensmelten met de overweldigende kracht van de natuur. Schrijver/regisseur Louise Hémon komt uit de wereld van experimentele films en documentaires, en L’engloutie is haar eerste speelfilm. Het is geen klassieke verhalende film, maar eerder een soort zintuiglijke ervaring, waarin sfeer, geluid en natuur even belangrijk zijn als het plot. Hémon liet zich inspireren door haar eigen familiegeschiedenis, meer specifiek door verhalen over onderwijzeressen die vroeger naar afgelegen gebieden werden gestuurd. De film speelt zich af in in een periode waarin de moderne wereld zich aandient. Het contrast met de oude wereld is ook zichtbaar in het verhaal van L’Engloutie: Aimée vertegenwoordigt vooruitgang en rationaliteit, terwijl het dorp vasthoudt aan tradities en bijgeloof. * * * On a bleak winter’s night in 1899, Aimée (Galatéa Bellugi) arrives in a remote mountain village in the snow-covered French Alps. She is a young, progressive schoolteacher, but in this community, isolated by snow and tradition, faith and legends prove to be at least as important as numbers and letters. Aimée is not deterred by the frosty reception and, armed with her knowledge, she sets out to tackle illiteracy and the village’s stubborn superstitions. As the snow continues to fall, Aimée’s attachment to the village and its inhabitants grows. At the same time, an intense, sensual restlessness awakens within her. L’Engloutie (‘The Swallowed Woman’) is a poetic, unsettling and at times oppressive winter ‘folk drama’, in which longing, fear and superstition merge with the overwhelming power of nature. Writer/director Louise Hémon comes from the world of experimental films and documentaries, and L’Engloutie is her first feature film. It is not a conventional narrative film, but rather a kind of sensory experience, in which atmosphere, sound and nature are just as important as the plot. Hémon drew inspiration from her own family history, more specifically from stories about female teachers who used to be sent to remote areas. The film is set in a period when the modern world is making its presence felt. The contrast with the old world is also evident in the story of L’Engloutie: Aimée represents progress and rationality, whilst the village clings to traditions and superstition.
