Los Domingos

De zeventienjarige Ainara (Blanca Soroa in haar eerste filmrol) is een intelligente en idealistische jonge vrouw, die al vroeg haar moeder verloor. Net als destijds haar moeder en andere familieleden, gaat ze naar een christelijke school. Iedereen in haar omgeving verwacht dat ze gaat studeren, maar zelf lijkt ze meer te voelen voor een contemplatief leven als non. Wanneer Ainara haar familie vertelt dat ze overweegt om in te treden in een klooster, lokt dit uiteenlopende reacties uit. Los domingos (‘De zondagen’) van de Spaanse regisseur Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, Cinco lobitos) verkent de positieve kanten én de keerzijdes van Ainara’s religieuze roeping. Tegelijkertijd roept de film vragen op over tolerantie, indoctrinatie, conformisme en persoonlijke vrijheid. Via subtiele observaties en scherpe dialogen ontstaat een indringend portret van een jonge vrouw, die haar eigen weg probeert te vinden. De film, die in Spanje een groot succes was, ging in wereldpremière op het filmfestival van San Sebastián. Daar sleepte hij vijf prijzen in de wacht, waaronder de Gouden Schelp voor Beste Film. In Nederland ging Los domingos in première op het Internationaal Film Festival Rotterdam. * * * Seventeen-year-old Ainara (Blanca Soroa in her first film role) is an intelligent and idealistic young woman who lost her mother at an early age. Like her mother and other relatives before her, she attends a Christian school. Everyone around her expects her to go to university, but she herself seems more drawn to a contemplative life as a nun. When Ainara tells her family that she is considering entering a convent, it provokes a range of reactions. Los domingos (‘Sundays’) by Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (Dicen, Cinco lobitos) explores both the positive aspects and the downsides of Ainara’s religious calling. At the same time, the film raises questions about tolerance, indoctrination, conformism and personal freedom. Through subtle observations and sharp dialogue, a poignant portrait emerges of a young woman trying to find her own way. The film, which was a huge success in Spain, had its world premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival. There it won five awards, including the Golden Shell for Best Film. In the Netherlands, Los domingos premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
