Truly Naked (with Q&A)

Q&A met schrijver/regisseur Muriel d'Ansembourg na afloop van deze voorstelling. Alec, een introverte Britse tiener, leeft in een allesbehalve gewone wereld. Zijn vader Dylan produceert kleinschalige pornofilms waarin hij zelf acteert. Hun huis dient als studio. Na het overlijden van zijn moeder wordt Alec steeds dieper het familiebedrijf ingezogen. Naast zijn huiswerk filmt en monteert hij zijn vaders producties en proberen ze samen het hoofd boven water te houden. Een verhuizing van Londen naar een slaperig kuststadje belooft een nieuwe start. Hier kent niemand Alecs achtergrond, hier kan hij misschien eindelijk een normale tiener zijn. Op school ontmoet hij Nina - eigenzinnig, onafhankelijk en met principes die haaks staan op alles waarmee Alec is opgegroeid. Nina daagt hem uit om kwetsbaar te durven zijn en samen te ontdekken wat echte intimiteit betekent. Alec begint te zien wie hij zou kunnen zijn, los van de wereld waarin hij is grootgebracht. Truly Naked, het speelfilmdebuut van Muriel d'Ansembourg, ging in première op de Berlinale, het filmfestival van Berlijn: een festival waar films met een uitgesproken persoonlijke visie een podium krijgen. Truly Naked was daar goed op zijn plek. Voordat het zover was, werkte D’Ansembourg bijna tien jaar lang aan haar project. Die lange ontwikkelingsperiode gaf haar de ruimte om op de juiste wijze een onderwerp te benaderen, dat zelden zo genuanceerd wordt behandeld in films als hier, te weten de invloed van de porno-industrie op hoe jonge mensen naar intimiteit en hun eigen identiteit kijken. D’Ansembourg streefde daarbij naar authenticiteit en werkte samen met mensen met ervaring in de porno-industrie, niet om te choqueren maar om clichés te vermijden. *** Q&A with writer/director Muriel d'Ansembourg following this screening. Alec, an introverted British teenager, lives in a world that is anything but ordinary. His father, Dylan, produces small-scale porn films in which he himself acts. Their home serves as a studio. Following his mother’s death, Alec becomes increasingly drawn into the family business. Alongside his schoolwork, he films and edits his father’s productions, and together they try to keep their heads above water. A move from London to a sleepy coastal town promises a fresh start. Here, nobody knows Alec’s background; here, he might finally be able to be a normal teenager. At school, he meets Nina – headstrong, independent and with principles that are at odds with everything Alec has grown up with. Nina challenges him to dare to be vulnerable and to discover together what true intimacy means. Alec begins to see who he could be, separate from the world in which he was raised. Truly Naked, Muriel d’Ansembourg’s feature film debut, premiered at the Berlinale, the Berlin Film Festival: a festival that provides a platform for films with a distinctly personal vision. Truly Naked was very much at home there. Before it came to that, D’Ansembourg had been working on her project for almost ten years. That long development period gave her the space to approach a subject in the right way – one that is rarely treated with such nuance in films as it is here, namely the influence of the porn industry on how young people view intimacy and their own identity. In doing so, D’Ansembourg strove for authenticity and collaborated with people with experience in the porn industry, not to shock but to avoid clichés.
