Mother Mary

Wereldser Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) zoekt, op een moment van persoonlijke en creatieve crisis, contact zoekt met haar voormalige vertrouwelinge Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), een oude vriendin en de modeontwerpster achter haar iconische looks. In het verleden waren de twee intens met elkaar verbonden: de één als artiest op het podium, de ander als creatieve kracht achter haar imago en uitstraling. Samen bouwden ze een wereld waarin muziek, mode en identiteit volledig met elkaar verweven raakten. Nu ze elkaar jaren later terugzien, blijkt dat die samenwerking diepe sporen heeft achtergelaten. Wat begint als een poging tot verzoening, verandert langzaam in een emotionele confrontatie waarin beide vrouwen worden gedwongen om hun eigen rol in het verleden onder ogen te zien. Mother Mary kreeg al vóór de release veel aandacht, vooral door de opvallende combinatie van makers en thema’s. De film is geregisseerd door David Lowery (The Green Knight, A Ghost Story), die bekendstaat om zijn dromerige en introspectieve stijl – nogal een verschil met de dynamische wereld van popsterren en high fashion. De film werd deels is opgenomen op grote festivalpodia, zoals Coachella. Daardoor vervaagt de grens tussen fictie en realiteit een beetje: scènes met publiek voelen echt, omdat ze tussen echte festivalgangers zijn opgenomen. De bijdrage van de Nederlandse modeontwerpster Iris van Herpen aan Mother Mary gaat verder dan alleen kostuumontwerp: haar futuristische, sculpturale creaties worden een verlengstuk van de identiteit van Mother Mary. Naarmate het personage verder opgaat in haar publieke imago, worden de outfits steeds uitgesprokener en conceptueler, waardoor visueel zichtbaar wordt hoe de grens tussen de echte persoon en haar gecreëerde persona vervaagt. Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen’s contribution to Mother Mary goes beyond mere costume design: her futuristic, sculptural creations become an extension of Mother Mary’s identity. As the character becomes increasingly absorbed in her public image, the outfits become ever more striking and conceptual, making it visually apparent how the boundary between the real person and her created persona is blurring. In this way, Van Herpen’s style – which often feels otherworldly and artistic – fits seamlessly with the film’s theme and actively contributes to the story itself.
