The Choral

In het door oorlog geteisterde Yorkshire van 1916 dreigt het plaatselijke koor te verdwijnen nadat vrijwel alle mannen naar het front zijn vertrokken. Vastbesloten om door te gaan, ziet het bestuur van The Choral Society zich genoodzaakt nieuwe zangers werven onder de jongens uit het dorp – tieners, die zelf op het punt staan om opgeroepen te worden voor militaire dienst. Tegelijkertijd moet er een nieuwe dirigent worden aangesteld. De keuze valt op Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), een gedreven musicus die recent is teruggekeerd uit Duitsland. Onder Guthrie’s strenge maar gepassioneerde leiding ontdekken de jongens de kracht van samenzang. The Choral is een hartverwarmend drama, geregisseerd door BAFTA-, Olivier- en Tony Award-winnaar Nicholas Hytner (The Lady in the Van, The Madness of King George). Het scenario is van hand van de bekroonde Britse schrijver Alan Bennett en markeert zijn vierde samenwerking met regisseur Hytner. De film wordt gedragen door uitmuntende acteerprestaties, met Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, Schindler’s List) in de hoofdrol van de bevlogen koorleider Dr. Guthrie. Determined to carry on, the committee of The Choral Society is forced to recruit new singers from among the village boys – teenagers who are themselves on the verge of being called up for military service. At the same time, a new conductor must be appointed. The choice falls on Dr Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), a passionate musician who has recently returned from Germany. Under Guthrie’s strict but passionate leadership, the boys discover the power of singing together. The Choral is a heart-warming drama, directed by BAFTA, Olivier and Tony Award winner Nicholas Hytner (The Lady in the Van, The Madness of King George). The screenplay is by the award-winning British writer Alan Bennett and marks his fourth collaboration with director Hytner. The film is carried by outstanding performances, with Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, Schindler’s List) in the lead role of the passionate choirmaster Dr Guthrie. The Choral had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
