De oudere Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abrahams) looks back on his life as a composer at the Viennese court and his obsessive jealousy of the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), whose exceptional talent he sees as a divine gift from which he himself has been deprived. Whilst Mozart behaves like an immature and dissolute genius, Salieri struggles with his faith and his desire for recognition. Driven by envy, he attempts to undermine Mozart’s career, which ultimately contributes to Mozart’s downfall. Miloš Forman’s Amadeus is regarded as one of the finest musical biopics ever made. The film is an exuberant sensory spectacle, in which Mozart’s music, the theatrical staging, the opulent costumes and the visual splendour of eighteenth-century Vienna merge into pure cinema. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor, and is now returning to cinemas in its original theatrical cut for the first time since its original release, in a 4K restoration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
