Merrily We Roll Along

Het verhaal van drie vrienden - componist Franklin Shepard, tekstschrijver Charley Kringas en schrijfster Mary Flynn – verteld in omgekeerde volgorde. In het heden is Franklin een succesvolle maar ongelukkige Hollywoodproducent, die zijn oude vriendschappen en idealen is kwijtgeraakt. Naarmate we verder terug in de tijd gaan, zien we hoe zijn band met Charley en Mary ooit begon als een hechte, creatieve samenwerking vol dromen. Ook worden de keuzes zichtbaar, die hen uiteindelijk uit elkaar hebben gedreven: ambitie, succes en persoonlijke offers. De film eindigt bij hun jonge jaren, wanneer de toekomst nog openligt en hun vriendschap nog intact is. De verfilming van de musical Merrily We Roll Along verliep niet van een leien dakje. Het project is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige Broadway-musical van Stephen Sondheim en George Furth, die destijds al bekendstond als ‘briljant maar complex’ en geen groot commercieel succes werd. Er werden gedurende meerdere decennia verschillend pogingen tot verfilming gedaan. Regisseurs en castwisselingen, budgetproblemen en de vraag hoe je Sondheims complexe muziek en structuur naar film vertaalt, zorgden ervoor dat het project telkens opnieuw werd uitgesteld of herschreven. Een extra uitdaging daarbij vormde de experimentele verhaalstructuur. Juist daardoor kreeg de verfilming, net als het bronmateriaal, bijna een cultstatus nog vóór hij te zien was en werd hij een soort heilige graal van musicalverfilmingen. * * * The story of three friends – composer Franklin Shepard, lyricist Charley Kringas and writer Mary Flynn – told in reverse chronological order. In the present day, Franklin is a successful but unhappy Hollywood producer who has lost his old friendships and ideals. As we go further back in time, we see how his bond with Charley and Mary once began as a close, creative partnership full of dreams. We also see the choices that ultimately drove them apart: ambition, success and personal sacrifices. The film ends in their younger years, when the future is still wide open and their friendship is still intact. The film adaptation of the musical Merrily We Roll Along did not go smoothly. The project is based on the Broadway musical of the same name by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, which was already known at the time as ‘brilliant but complex’ and did not become a major commercial success. Various attempts were made to adapt it for the screen over several decades. Changes in directors and cast, budget problems and the question of how to translate Sondheim’s complex music and structure to film meant that the project was repeatedly postponed or rewritten. The experimental narrative structure posed an additional challenge. It was precisely this that gave the film adaptation, just like the source material, almost cult status even before it was released, and made it a sort of holy grail of musical film adaptations.
