Radioman

Terwijl de wereld aan de rand van de Tweede Wereldoorlog staat, begint de jonge Berre aan zijn geluidsstage in het iconische Flagey radiogebouw in Brussel. Al snel blijkt hij een bijna magisch gehoor te hebben. Zijn pad kruist dat van de joodse actrice Elza, die haar eerste stappen zet in de hoorspelstudio’s. Terwijl Berre houvast zoekt in de kracht van geluid, ontbvandt er een liefdesvonk die luider klinkt dan de naderende oorlog. Radioman is een film over passie, verbeelding en de zoektocht naar menselijkheid in donkere tijden. Het verhaal is gesitueerd in de wonderlijke wereld van de Belgische radiohoorspelen in de roerige jaren 40. Achter de schermen is de film eigenlijk een liefdesbrief aan radio zelf. Regisseur Frank van Passel dook diep in de geschiedenis van het medium en wilde laten zien hoe radio in die tijd een soort magie had: met alleen geluid kon je hele werelden oproepen. Het Flageygebouw was in de jaren ’40 zelfs een echte “geluidsfabriek”, waar technici en acteurs samen verhalen creëerden die het hele land bereikten. * * * As the world teeters on the brink of the Second World War, young Berre begins his sound engineering internship at the iconic Flagey radio building in Brussels. It soon becomes clear that he has an almost magical ear. His path crosses that of the Jewish actress Elza, who is taking her first steps in the radio drama studios. As Berre seeks solace in the power of sound, a spark of love ignites that rings out louder than the approaching war. Radioman is a film about passion, imagination and the search for humanity in dark times. The story is set in the wondrous world of Belgian radio plays during the turbulent 1940s. Behind the scenes, the film is actually a love letter to radio itself. Director Frank van Passel delved deep into the history of the medium and wanted to show how radio possessed a kind of magic in those days: with sound alone, you could conjure up entire worlds. In the 1940s, the Flagey building was even a veritable ‘sound factory’, where technicians and actors worked together to create stories that reached the whole country.
